David is an Old Testament character in the Bible best known as a "man after God's own heart" (1 Samuel 13:14). It's one of those great descriptors that we "ordinary" Christians would never think is possible to characterize our own lives. But what if God doesn't see it as a merit badge that He awards to just a few who earned it but as a normative command that all followers of Christ should strive to be—a "people after God's own heart"? Even in the most difficult of challenges, the most intense pain and the biggest failure, David's life gives us a picture of the journey one's heart takes when it's centered upon God and when it's not centered upon God. His journey assures us that we, too, can and must center our lives upon the One who is our Rock, our Fortress and our Deliverer (2 Samuel 22:3).
